About Us

Our names are Merai and Daniel. We are from Alberta, Canada and are starting to plan a trip around the world. We have been talking about taking a year off for a few years now and have finally picked March 2018 as our time to leave. We will quit our jobs and leave for a year to see the world. We decided a blog would be a good way to start documenting our planning process as well as our current adventures.

During our discussions about travelling for a year we have both had our “oh my god what are we thinking” and “what will we do when we get back” moments, but have finally settled on “we have to do this”.

We have been together over five years now. Wanting to travel and have adventures is something that brought us together. I remember Danny telling me that at one point when he was talking to his sister she had told him: “You need to find someone who will jump into the water in the Galapagos with you”. He’s so lucky he found me 🙂

Danny is a heavy duty mechanic and has been with the same company for almost eight years now. He is really hoping that they will still have a place for him when we come back.

I’m an engineer in training with a pipeline company and am hoping to get my P.Eng before we leave on our trip which is why we’ve planned to leave in 2018. I’m very nervous about being able to find a job when I come back.

The thing I am most worried about is missing out on the lives of my family and friends. I am very close with them and try to be the person that is always there. If I am gone for a year I will no longer be that person. I’m going to miss out on a year of birthdays and tea parties and camping trips. Look how amazing these friends are…

And this family!!!

It will be very hard to leave all these people for a year, but we both agree that if we don’t go we will regret it.

Great plan and brave decision but you will never ever regret it. Don’t worry too much about the little things you need to sort out before you go, they’ll all fall into place. We’re a bit older than you guys but did exactly the same thing more than a year ago. Only difference is we don’t really plan on going back to our old lives. Best of luck.

A year is not really that long in a grand scheme of things. You will catch up with family after you come back and you won’t skip a beat.
